October 2026 Newsletter

From the AYHD Board

AYHD at SSHA

Brayden and Emma will be at the Social Science History Association (SSHA) annual conference in Atlanta this November! They encourage everyone to go to the Family and Demography network meeting at noon on Friday, and in our November newsletter, we will also try to include details about a social event that AYHD members are welcome to join.

Young Demographers’ Conference

The 18th Conference of Young Demographers has been announced for 3–5 February 2027 at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, Prague (as usual). This is a great introductory conference for students in historical demography to attend, especially as an opportunity to meet students from other universities and other subfields of demography! More details here.

Special Issue in Population Studies

Hampton is co-organising a special issue of Population Studies, focused on methodological debates related to excess mortality estimation. The perspectives of (young) historical demographers are very much welcome! Anyone potentially interested in contributing should reach out to him at hampton.gaddy@magd.ox.ac.uk. More details here.

Spotlights

Every newsletter we will spotlight one article or working paper by a young historical demographer or researcher in an adjacent field. Would you like to have your work shared or do you know a recent paper that deserves to be spotlighted? Send an email to Joris (j.kok@qub.ac.uk) with information on the research you would like to see shared.

This newsletter’s spotlight article is:

Bayesian Indirect Estimation of Historical Fertility in Europe and US Using Online Genealogical Data

Published in Sociological Methods & Research by Riccardo Omenti (University of Bologna), Monica Alexander, and Nicola Barban. You can read the full article here: https://doi.org/10.1177/00491241261463559

We would also like to spotlight three other exciting new papers:
